1. Firefox – a web browser for the ages. Okay, a web browser that beats Internet Explorer by preventing pop ups and harmful scripts from being downloaded to your computer. Lots of nifty features too, including tabbed browsing, live bookmarks, and tons of add-on features.

2. Spybot Search and Destroy – this software gets rid of adware, spyware, and other junky software. Spybot blocks the installation of spyware before it occurs; this is not a replacement for antivirus software. It’s just a way to make your overall computer more secure.

3. AVG Antvirus – offers basic antivirus protection including scanning email attachments for viruses and scanning of all hard drives, removable drives, and external drives on your computer. A paid version does some additional tasks and includes technical support.

4. Zone Alarm – if you don’t have a firewall installed on your computer, you are opening yourself up to potential catastrophic security breaches. With Stealth Mode enabled you can search the internet in private, away from the intruding eyes of those who might want to steal your important information.

5. Notepad++ – the notepad that comes with your computer does read text files, but that’s about all it does. After decades, Microsoft still hasn’t improved their software. Then again, at least they haven’t broke it right? If you are a programmer or even someone who just wants to get more out of your notepad text editor, Notepad++ is for you.

6. OpenOffice.org – Word documents or PowerPoint presentations are everywhere. Working with Microsoft Office documents no longer means that you have to buy Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org works with all of the popular Microsoft formats as well as the newly popular Open Document formats. It is great for kids who need to write papers for school, or business is on a tight budget. It is also completely free.

Paying for software is fine that you don’t always have to pay for software is plenty of great software available. It is completely free. This is just a very small list of software that will help improve your computer and won’t cost you a penny. I hope this makes your life a bit easier.
