Windows Registry Defined

Just what is the Windows Registry? The registry is a file in the Windows operating system where all of the hardware and software configurations are stored in order that the operating system may function properly. Without it, or an error in the file, and everything hits the fan literally.

We need to get a better understanding of the function of the registry before we can start discussing the need to clean the registry. Exactly, what is so important about the registry? Every computer that uses some form of a Windows operating system contains and stores configuration files in a file knows as the registry. Starting with Windows 95, Microsoft adopted this method of storing the system configuration files and prior to that , those details were stored in the .INI files on your local hard drive. Unfortunately, these configuration files were not in one file, but instead, were scattered over the hard drive making the computer operating system slow and very inefficient.

When the Windows registry was introduced, all of the system files (configuration) were now in one file that could be easily accessed, and so much faster, thereby speeding up the computer as well. So if this makes the system run so much faster, why then does your computer seem to slow down after a period of time? Do the configuration files get scattered again? To better understand this, and to answer the question of why we need to clean the registry, we need to take a look at how the Windows registry functions.

As mentioned previously, the Windows registry maintains the configuration of your computer as well as the system settings. Every time a change is made to your computer settings, the registry creates a record of this change. Any time that you install or uninstall a software application, or remove or change hardware, or even make a change to your system settings, a log file is generated in the registry. However, the previous log files in the registry for prior changes, remain there and are not removed. Over a period of time, the registry file gets quite large, and begins to slow down the response time for file access.

It’s for this reason that It is very important to clean the Windows registry from time to time in order that it is up to date, and all of these old files are deleted. You can see that with all of the old log files remaining in the registry file, the operating system becomes much slower and is also vulnerable to frequent malfunctions resulting in a system crash. By using a Registry cleaning software, it is very easy to remove all of the old files and also repair other errors and problems such as broken links, shortcuts, etc. Using a good Registry cleaner, will ensure that the registry is up to date and other errors or problems are repaired, making your operating system work smoother and faster. We highly recommend that you use a registry cleaner on a regular basis in order that you will have a problem free computing experience.
